A close friend and business associate has a background in radio and television announcing.  He is a marvelous public speaker, and people always comment on this “gift” he has.  However, as he has told me confidentially, he was not always that eloquent.

In fact, at one point in his life, his fear of speaking in public was almost crippling.  So, how did he change?  First, he listened to others who were great speakers, and began to imitate many of their speech patterns.

Ultimately, he hired a speech coach who pointed out negatives like his regional accent.  The coach then encouraged him to tape record himself and listen to it back.  It worked!  The lesson learned is that we all have fears, we all have flaws, and we all could use an independent voice to point us in the right direction.  When two people are able to engage in this type of constructive rhetoric, great things can happen.
