I just read an article about David Foster.  It caught my eye because as a musician myself, I am an avid fan.  Off the top of your head, you may not know his name, but I guarantee you, his music has touched you at some point, no matter what your musical tastes may be.

After 50 years as a performer, song writer and producer, his credentials include working with artists like Earth, Wind & Fire, Barbra Streisand, Michael Jackson, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli, just to name a few.  He’s won coveted industry awards galore and he’s still going strong.

In the article written by Carol Linn, she quoted him as saying, “It’s my job to understand the vision of the artist and guide him or her to being successful.”  That’s brilliant in that it shows his diversified talents and understanding that a cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all approach will not lead to greatness.  I can relate to that as a coach.

Just like David views each artist’s strengths and weaknesses, and I’m sure would never offer the same song to every one of his clients, it’s the same with my coaching practice.  In the last 24 hours, I spent time with a gentleman who is a brilliant scientist with a major product he’s developed and patented.  He has no gross revenues to speak of but I understand his vision and look forward to helping him make his dream a reality.  A few hours later, my time was spent with the CEO of a $6.5 million company where we’re working on ways to get his entire team working towards the same goals.  Different conversations for different challenges.

For me, it’s diversity and variety that’s interesting and yes, fun.  It’s understanding each client’s unique vision and helping them achieve it.  It’s what drives David Foster.  And if I do my job, hopefully each of my clients will have a string of “hits,” to borrow a term from David’s vocabulary.
